Educational Needs

This luncheon is designed to facilitate the understanding of basic anatomy and physiology related to the most common dermatological and cosmetic skin procedures.  There are a great variety of therapeutic options which a provider needs to comprehend in order to optimize outcomes.

Participants

This luncheon will be geared toward primary care physicians who have not had extensive formal training in dermatology or are new to light based medicine.  It will also be informative to any provider or industry worker who wants to understand more about the anatomy and physiology of most common light based treatments.

Background Requirements

The ASLMS course Fundamentals of Lasers in Health Care is helpful but not required.

Instructional Content and/or Expected Learning Outcomes
This lecture will focus on understanding how the most common diagnoses relates to skin structure, what is the most current evidence for treatment options, their side effects and likely outcomes.  The luncheon will cover basic options for hair removal; vascular lesions such as veins, rosacea, cherry angiomas and venous lakes; treatment for pigmented lesions such as solar lentigines, SKs, melasma and certain nevi; benign skin tumors including syringomas, warts, and sebaceous hyperplasia; light based acne treatments and scar revision. There will also be a short review of appropriate photography. Participants should take away the ability to choose the correct treatment modality, understand the light tissue interactions and be aware of the expected outcomes.
